Student Health Insurance Plan

All full-time students (12 credits and more) are required to have medical insurance. All domestic, full-time students who are not covered under a comparable U.S.-issued health insurance policy must purchase health insurance offered through the Conservatory before being allowed to register. All international, full-time students must purchase health insurance offered through the Conservatory before being allowed to register. Students enrolled for less than 12 credits (part-time status) are not eligible to buy insurance through the Conservatory. Students who take a leave of absence may also be ineligible to continue their health insurance policy through the Conservatory. Students enrolled in Optional Practical Training (OPT) are eligible, but not required, to enroll.

The cost for individual coverage will be $2,100 for the 2013-2014 school year ($875 for fall semester, $1,225 for the spring/summer term). For information on the rates to subscribe a spouse and/or children, please contact the Office of Student Life. Coverage begins on August 1 of each academic year (January 1 for students starting in the spring semester).

The Conservatory urges all students (and parents / legal guardians, if applicable) to thoroughly compare health insurance options. Students who opt-out of the Conservatory’s Student Health Insurance Plan are encouraged to ensure that their individual plan has sufficient coverage and providers in San Francisco. The Conservatory encourages every student to select a primary care doctor in the San Francisco area, especially if the student has a medical condition that requires routine and regular care.

April 29, 2013: All returning full-time students will receive an information email and must use the link below to enroll/waive coverage in the Conservatory’s Student Health Insurance Plan for 2013-2014 academic year.  

July 1, 2013: All new fall semester students will receive an information email and must use the link below to enroll/waive coverage in the Conservatory’s Student Health Insurance Plan for 2013-2014 academic year.

The deadline to complete enrollment/waiver for the 2013-2014 academic year is July 26, 2013 (enrollment and waiver process for students starting in the spring semester is from December 1, 2012 to January 4, 2013).

Students who do not complete the online health insurance enrollment/waiver process will have the Conservatory’s Student Health Insurance Plan charge placed on their term bill and will be unable to register for classes until the enrollment/waiver process is completed online.

Please note: The cost shown on the Kaiser enrollment/waiver website does not reflect the brokerage fee. SFCM is assessed an additional brokerage fee for the student health insurance plan. The total cost is listed above and will be reflected on the SFCM term bill for health insurance.

About Our Plan with Kaiser Permanente

The Conservatory has selected Kaiser Permanente as the student health insurance plan provider. Kaiser Permanente is a nonprofit health plan with nearly 8.7 million members nationwide and 6.5 million in California. The plan from Kaiser Permanente offers $40 payments, without the deductible applying, for routine preventive care, physicals, hearing tests, primary and specialty care visits, outpatient individual mental health services, and urgent care visits. Prescription drug coverage costs range from $15 to $60, without the deductive applying. An extended outline of the plan is available below, or by contacting the Office of Student Life.

The Kaiser Permanente plan includes online tools called “My Health Manager,” which allows students to select and change a doctor, email their doctor’s office without any additional fees, access their personal health record, view lab results and office visit information, request appointments online, order prescription refills, and personalize healthy lifestyle programs for exercise, nutrition, stress reduction, and smoking cessation. For Conservatory students who are more comfortable speaking their native language for their healthcare needs, Kaiser Permanente offers multi-lingual providers and care units.
